Working it out: Bring on the sweat

I have a bit of a love, hate relationship with exercise. Often times I want to exercise, but as I start to put on my sneakers or head to the treadmill, I can’t follow through. I get distracted by social media or school work.  A trainer like Rachel was able to give me that gentle, extra nudge I needed.

I was pretty nervous the first day. Rachel took it easy on me though, starting simple and slow so I could slowly start to build muscle. We worked out a little bit of upper and lower body ie arms, legs and core.

I’m sure this is a common experience, but If I’m at the gym or going on a jog, and I’m struggling, I always try to hide it. I feel embarrassed when I struggle. But while training at InsideOut, I felt safe. It’s a space for me to struggle, and get the support of trainers like Rachel when I struggle.

The next training session had a few exercises I recognized, and a few I didn’t. Once you get to know the basic exercises, it’s easier to learn a different variety of exercises!

Squatting was tough for me that day! There was an exercise in which I did a split-squat with one of my legs up on the bench and 2 10-pound weights in my hands. When I was squatting, I couldn’t get my leg all the way down to the ground, but Rachel didn’t mind. She just told me to do my best and take water breaks whenever I needed. Gratitude for Rachel!

After exercising, I often feel sore the next day. This is normal, but I always wondered if it was a good thing or a bad thing.  When I asked Rachel, she said muscles need to break down before they build back up, but when they do build back up, they build back up stronger!! This meant that feeling a little sore, meant I was making good progress.

My favourite part was working with the TRX, or suspension training system. These are in the form of straps anchored into the ceiling and I was told to grab them and use them to do pull-ups while my feet were at an angle on the ground.

Rachel also asked me if there was any specific kind of music I wanted to listen to, which made me happy because music is a very important part of a workout for me! Without good music, it’s not a good workout. I’m sure most of us will agree! Thankfully, Rachel also likes 80’s pop music, so we blasted some classics and worked it out, from the inside out.

Rachel is only one of the amazing trainers at InsideOut.
